Las Vegas is getting an NHL team, and to form this team, it’s time for an expansion project.
Adding to the NHL Las Vegas brings more emotion and eyes in the league, however their favorite team that means something else. When added Las Vegas for the league, they received a first round pick somewhere between the first and sixth – depending on the lottery. The NHL will hold an expansion project to set up a list of unnamed team in Las Vegas.
Unlike the expansion project of the NHL 2000, teams will be allowed only to protect seven forwards, three defenders and a goalkeeper or goalie eight skaters. This format means that teams will lose a piece of the organization that is not essential but is beneficial. Two forwards and defense should be exposed who have played 40 games in 2016 and 70 games from 2015/16 to 2016/17 seasons. The goalkeeper must be under contract for 2017/18 or be a restricted free agent. Therefore, a player like Dylan McIlrath of the New York Rangers, is maintained below 56 matches played this season, will not be eligible for the Expansion Draft.
When the expansion project is difficult is required to protect the teams and players who are exempt form the project. All professionals first and second year are exempt from selection. So Matthews and Patrick Laine Auston are exempt form the project. All players are currently no effective and continuous / commercial clauses limited movement at the time of expansion draft must also be protected. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane Jersey would be obliged to protect.
However players have the option to give up their trade clause without being exposed to the project. With this format, which allows ICE Las Vegas to a team that can compete immediately. There are also rules in place that prohibit trading form Las Vegas again players drafted before January 1, 2018, and Las Vegas can not buy contracts until 2018 offseason. This avoids Las Vegas to take in bad form teams contrast and then buy out. So if they were from Las Vegas to select Dustin Brown are Los Angeles, they would not be allowed to buy off it until next season.
The expansion project is complicated and difficult, however, the way it is structured allows Vegas to be more competitive than any other expansion team was immediate. The project also will cause major headaches around the league. When it comes down to it, all teams in the league will lose a piece of the organization.
